UNDP GREEN GROWTH AND JOBS ACCELERATOR

We support the green and sustainable growth of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) while creating green jobs for women and youth in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan.

About the initiative

The Green Growth and Jobs Accelerator, a new UNDP initiative, which is part of the Danish-Arab Partnership Programme (DAPP) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, supports established entrepreneurs and SMEs in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan to accelerate the green growth of their businesses. This contribution aims to facilitate the local transition to a more sustainable and green economy, fostering green jobs for women and youth.

Over five years, in collaboration with Flat6Labs as an implementing partner, UNDP will deliver strategic business development advisory on green growth and support companies with business instruments to grow their business in the four Arab countries. The Accelerator process offers capacity building, mentoring and access to external experts and networks from the local, regional, and global business development ecosystems to help the SMEs accelerate their business solutions. The programme aims to empower youth in the four countries through engaging young people as co-creators and advisory capacity to businesses partaking in the Accelerator programme.

Month 1 - Business Review

The first month is dedicated to the Business Review focusing on enhancing and perfecting the SMEs’ business models.

The SMEs will gain insights into crucial elements that make a sustainable business model, including the value proposition, customer segments, revenue streams, and cost structure.

Month 2 - Operational Flow

During the second month, the focus will be on optimizing operational processes and fostering efficient workflows within eco-friendly enterprises.

At the beginning of this month, participating SMEs are introduced to the Impact Business Model Canvas. Leveraging the educational resources provided, SMEs are expected to engage with the canvas throughout the Operational Flow month and deliver a finalized version by the end of the month.

Month 3 - Scaling and Impact

The third month will tackle scaling and impact. SMEs will investigate methods for expanding their eco-friendly enterprises and amplifying their influence.

At the beginning of the month, participating SMEs are introduced to the deliverable of the month, which is the third component of the acceleration programme, the Competitive Landscape and Analysis. Leveraging the insights acquired during the Scaling and Impact month, SMEs are tasked with conducting comprehensive research on their competitors and providing a detailed competition analysis by the end of the month.

Month 4 - Investment Readiness

During the fourth month, the focus will be on preparing participating companies for investment readiness.

At the beginning of the month, participating SMEs are introduced to the Investment Memo. During the Accelerator, SMEs are expected to create a comprehensive Investment Memo that effectively communicates their business opportunity and persuasively presents their case for investment.

Month 5 - Accelerator Journey Wrap-up

The concluding month of the programme is dedicated to completing the accelerator journey and preparing participants for the subsequent stages.

The curriculum will feature sessions on growth plans, investor relationships, post-accelerator assistance, and personal growth. Additionally, participants will partake in networking events and farewell activities to reinforce the relationships established during the program.

The Accelerator

Over a dynamic 5-month journey, the Accelerator provides the SMEs with the necessary knowledge, skills, and networks to better thrive in the green economy. Participants will develop sustainable business plans, accelerate their growth trajectory and strengthen their capacity to create direct, decent jobs, while actively fostering positive environmental and social change. This is done through five different thematic areas: 1. Business Review, 2. Operational Flow, 3. Scaling and Impact, 4. Investment Readiness, 5. Accelerator Journey wrap-up. Once every month, the SMEs will have a Pitch Night, an event where SMEs are introduced to members of the entrepreneurship ecosystem. These Pitch Nights also help teams practice the pitching of their projects in a more informal setting.
